WHAT PROGRAMS DO YOU USE TO WRITE?

  • I have a somewhat complicated process. I draft exclusively in Scrivener. Once I have a full, completed draft that has been combed through at least once, I compile it into a Word document. Once it’s in Word, I don’t return to the Scrivener doc. I do all my polishing in Word and that’s what I share with betas. Once it’s ready, I upload it to Vellum. I do all my final editing/formatting in Vellum before I generate the kindle and paperback files!

will you read my manuscript?

  • Between moving my own career forward and honoring my commitments to current CPs, I am not looking for more beta reading projects at this time. But this may change. If it does, the place to hear about it will be IG.

are you a plotter or a pantser?

  • I’m a…plotting pantser? I prefer to think of myself as a discovery writer. A story typically starts for me with a scene or a snippet of dialogue. I often say it “haunts” me. The story grows from that scene or that vibe. Once I’m deep into writing, I shift from pure discovery to plotting out the end as I go along.

what resources can you recommend for aspiring writers?

  • I wouldn’t be anywhere without Brandon Sanderson’s creative writing lectures. Find several years worth of recorded lectures on youtube (especially useful for SFF writers).

  • I was very blessed to participate in Adrienne Young’s inaugural class of her Writing with the Soul workshop. She plans to teach it again and I cannot recommend it highly enough!

  • There are thousands of craft books out there. Just do some googling and you’ll see a repeat list of top inspirers. I want to caution you though—if you’re like me, you can get so wrapped up in process and craft that you forget to do that little thing…what’s it called? Oh yeah, WRITE!

  • Find a writing community! Use IG, Twitter, whatever platform you prefer. My writing community is so essential to my progress. It takes a village to write a book. Put yourself out there and seek out the village you need to champion your stories and your success. Writing is a solo activity and that can be really lonely. Let the writing community boost you up!
